You have many choices when it comes to choosing a landscape photography workshop. Those choices include location, cost, group size, focus of the trip (just shooting/tour, or shoot & learn), and of course the group leader – his/her body or work from the location and reputation for helping you get the most out your trip. If you are reading this then I am guessing you like my work and you are hoping to add something similar to your portfolio and also attain an enhanced mastery of the tricks of the trade – both in capturing and post processing your pictures. If so, then read on as I outline what you can expect from one of my workshops.

  • Small Groups with personal attention: With large groups individuals often get lost in the crowd while competing for ‘the good spot’. Not in my workshops!
  • Right place at the right time: Light makes right. Aside from timing each location with the season, shooting in optimal light, which includes sunrise and sunset at magic hour, will always be a priority. When the light is right for the subject, we shoot. When the weather is bad, we break or work for a few hours indoors. Time is valuable so we will try not to waste it and be productive.
  • Composition: Perfect light and the best equipment alone do not make for great photos. Composition is king and the foundation of all great photography. We will spend time, both in the field optimizing the compositions, as well as class time reviewing the fine points of composition.

  • Capture techniques: A good camera, lenses and a sturdy tripod are important but what you do with them is critical. Are your captures sharp? Do you know how to shoot for a panorama or HDR? Do you own the right set of filters and know how to get the most out them? What about shooting water or compositions that include the sun? Are you sure you are using the optimal aperture and shutter speed for your subject? Are you being creative with long exposures or multiple exposures? All this and more will be covered!
  • Post processing tips and tricks You got the shot but do you do with it? Is using HDR software better or worse than exposure blending? Do you know how to pull detail of out of the highlight or shadow areas without creating noise? Can you bring a drab image to back to life? When not shooting or resting I will share many of my post processing methods on actual captures and demonstrate several Photoshop plugins that will not only help to optimize your results, but also help you enter the creative world of digital artistry.
